Identifying the topic sentences In expository writing, each paragraph generally covers a single topic. In most such paragraphs, a single sentence, called topic sentence, states the main idea of the paragraph directly. The rest of the paragraph then explains or expends on the idea of the topic sentence. The topic sentence is often at or near the beginning of the paragraph. Identifying the topic sentences helps you to keep the writer’s main ideas in front of your mind. This skill is also helpful when skimming a text, or when outlining further review. 2. Guessing Unknown Words and Expressions (II) Types of Context Clues (Part One) In Unit 4, the general idea of using context clues to figure out the meaning of unknown vocabulary items was introduced. There are, in fact, four major types of context clues:

1)General context;2) Definitions (direct or indirect)3)Synonyms or near-synonyms;4)Wordsused incontrastYou should always try to use your general understanding ofthe text and your own life experience tomake an educated guess about themeaning of unfamiliar wordsor expressions. One year peoplewear sunglasses on topoftheir heads and wear jeans and boots;theydrink whitewine andeat sushi atJapaneserestaurants.(para.1)From what is said in this sentence, we can instantlyfigureout that sushimust be akind of foodserved at Japanese restaurants.Look for statements elsewhere in the text that offer a definition ofa word you are unfamiliar with. It'salmost impossibleto write about specificfadsbecause these interests that peoplefollow canchange very quickly (para. 2)From this example, you can guess that “fads"probably means“certain interests that peoplefollowwhich often change very quickly."Likepeoplein any country,Americans enjoy followingthelivesofcelebrities:movie stars, sportsheroes, famous artists, politicians, and thelike. (para.3)In this sentence,“"move stars",“"sports heroes",“famous artists",and“politicians"served asexamples which together define the word“celebrities"三、Vocabulary1.escapevi., vt.escaped, escaping(常与from连用)逃走The hotel guests tried their best to escape from the burning building.旅客们尽力从燃烧的大楼中逃出来。The three brothers soon escaped from their captors这三兄弟不久就从抓住他们的那些人手中逃走了。(液体等)漏出gasescapingfromthepipe煤气从管中漏出Waterescapedrapidlyfromthedrainpipe.水从排水管中迅速流出。There is a strange odour intheair.Thegas must have been escaping somewhere"空气中有股奇怪的味道,一定是什么地方在漏煤气了。”避免escapeddeath免于一死Thereisnoescapinghim.怎么也避不开他。疏忽,忽略Nothingescapedhisattention.什么也逃不过他的注意。You cannot expect that something may escape the teacher's attention你不要奢望有什么能逃过老师的注意。612.fashionn.时笔,时尚
61 1) General context; 2) Definitions (direct or indirect) 3) Synonyms or near-synonyms; 4) Words used in contrast. You should always try to use your general understanding of the text and your own life experience to make an educated guess about the meaning of unfamiliar words or expressions. One year people wear sunglasses on top of their heads and wear jeans and boots; they drink white wine and eat sushi at Japanese restaurants. (para. 1) From what is said in this sentence, we can instantly figure out that sushi must be a kind of food served at Japanese restaurants. Look for statements elsewhere in the text that offer a definition of a word you are unfamiliar with. It’s almost impossible to write about specific fads because these interests that people follow can change very quickly. (para. 2) From this example, you can guess that “fads” probably means “certain interests that people follow which often change very quickly.” Like people in any country, Americans enjoy following the lives of celebrities: movie stars, sports heroes, famous artists, politicians, and the like. (para. 3) In this sentence, “move stars”, “sports heroes”, “famous artists”, and “politicians” served as examples which together define the word “celebrities”. 三、Vocabulary 1. escape vi., vt. escaped, escaping (常与 from 连用)逃走 The hotel guests tried their best to escape from the burning building. 旅客们尽力从燃烧的大楼中逃出来。 The three brothers soon escaped from their captors. 这三兄弟不久就从抓住他们的那些人手中逃走了。 (液体等)漏出 gas escaping from the pipe 煤气从管中漏出 Water escaped rapidly from the drainpipe. 水从排水管中迅速流出。 There is a strange odour in the air. The gas must have been escaping somewhere. "空气中有股奇怪的味道,一定是什么地方在漏煤气了。" 避免 escaped death 免于一死 There is no escaping him. 怎么也避不开他。 疏忽,忽略 Nothing escaped his attention. 什么也逃不过他的注意。 You cannot expect that something may escape the teacher's attention. 你不要奢望有什么能逃过老师的注意。 2. fashion n. 时髦,时尚 Is it the fashion to wear short skirts? Yes, short skirts are in fashion
