3 work out the answers. Question 13 is about the author’s way of writing this article: from general advice to specific examples. This is the most common, and often the most efficient, pattern of exposition called illustration. Good examples help to clarify a writer’s thought by making the general specific, and the abstract concrete. They also add interest and help to persuade or convince the readers. If you conclude the general advice of a paragraph in a sentence, that is known as the topic sentence. The use of a topic sentence is an effective way of writing a paragraph. Supporting a topic sentence with examples or illustrations makes a general statement specific and easy to understand. Vivid examples make abstract ideas clear, interesting, memorable or convincing.
