Spinal Cord The spinal cord,a long cylindrical structure,is located in the vertebral canal and invested by meninges.It extends from the foramen magnum,where it continues with the medulla oblongata. In transverse section,the spinal cord is seen to consist of the gray matter and the white matter.The gray matter of the spinal cord is centrally located and is surrounded by the white matter

Spinal Cord Thirty-one pairs of spinal nerves arise from the spinal cord and pass through the intervertebral foramina between adjacent vertebrae of the vertebral column. Each portion of the cord that gives rise to a pair of spinal nerves is called a spinal segment.Each spinal segment is functionally correlated with the related cutaneous area,skeletal musculature and viscera

Functions of Spinal Cord One of the principal functions of the spinal cord is to convey afferent impulses which initiates from the somatic and visceral receptors to the brain and to conduct efferent impulses from the brain to the effectors. A second principal function is related to the reflexes.It plays the part of the center of the segmental reflex arc,e.g. the stretch reflex,the reflex of bladder and rectal emptying
