1 Unit One: My First Job Teaching objectives: To make students understand the meaning of “last straw”. To help students analyze the personality of the young man. To analyze the personality of the headmaster. To help students understand the unpleasant experience of the young man’s first job. To help students analyze the writer’s techniques for developing the main idea. To supply students with opportunities to practice their basic language skills. Time Allocation and Teaching Procedure: About 4 sessions (8 class hours) are needed for this unit. 1 st session 1. Pre-reading questions: Test students on the background reading materials and see if they know how to write a CV and how to be successful in an interview. 2. Study of Text I: Ask students to sum up the main idea of the text. Analyze the writer’s techniques to see how the writer naturally comes to the conclusion that the young man’s experience in the interview was frightening and annoying and his first job was unpleasant. Ask students to predict whether the young man would take his first job or not. 3.Assignment Review Text I. Preview Text II. Read Text III. 2 nd session 1.
