Book Three Unit Seven On Not Answering the Telephone Teaching objectives:  To make students understand that the text is an argumentative essay in which the writer argues for a proposition;  To acquaint the students with one of the ways of developing argument-induction, that is, using large numbers of examples to prove his point;  To help students understand the style and the tone of the essay;  To make students understand the three ways in the text which the writer uses to make his proposition more easily accepted: exaggeration; reversal of the reader’s expectations, and striking comparison;  To acquaint the students with style of magazine articles;  To supple students with the background knowledge of the great inventor and his invention and modern ways of communication.  To supply students with opportunities to practice their basic language skills. Time Allocation and Teaching Procedure: About 4 sessions (8 class hours) are needed for this unit. 1 st session 1. Pre-reading questions: Test students on the background reading materials and see if they can point out the writer’s intention in writing this article. 2. Study of Text I: Ask students to point out words, phrases or sentences in the text that summarizes the main idea of each paragraph and sum up the main idea of the whole text. Ask students to point out words, phrases or sentences in the text that indicate that the style is informal and the tone is humorous. Ask students to give examples in the text to understand the ways the writer uses to develop his argument. Analyze the structure of the text: involving the students in summing up the techniques of argumentative writing. 3. Assignment  Review Text I.  Preview Text II. 2 nd session 1. Continuation of the study of Text I: Allow students some time to ask questions on the text. Focus on language points of the text. 2. Study of Text II: Ask questions on Text II to help students better understand the style of articles in magazine. Acquaint the students with basic knowledge of journalism. 3. Assignment  Review Text I and Text II.  Workbook: p.99 Guided writing, p.105 Translation A

3rd session 1.Continuation of the study of Text II: Allow students some time to ask questions on the text. Ask students to sum up the main idea of the text.
