Unit Nine:Who Killed Benny Paret? Teaching objectives: To acquaint the students with some basic knowledge of prizefighting To help students master some boxing terms and their Chinese equivalents To make students understand what a magazine editorial is and how the writer expresses his viewpoint. To help students better understand the general methods of editorial writing and the characteristics of the writer's style To make students understand what a parallelism is and when it is used Time Allocation and Teaching Procedure: About 4 sessions (8 class hours)are needed for this unit. 1st session 1.Pre-reading questions: Test students on the background reading materials and see if they have a general idea of Text I and ask students to fill in the blanks with relevant information. 2.Study of Text I: Ask students to decide which is the topic sentence,what are the events narrated and what is the writer's viewpoint,and see how the writer relates his view to the event in his narration. Analyzing the structure of the text:involving the students in summing up the techniques of editorial writing Ask students to sum up the main idea of Text I. 3.Assignment ◆Review Text I. ◆Preview TextⅡ ◆Read Text III 2nd session L.Continuation of the study of Text上: Allow students some time to ask questions on Text I. Focus on language points of Text I. 2.Assignment Student's Book:P104-105 Vocabulary,P107-108 Questions: Workbook:P137-138 Translation. 3rd session l.Study of TextⅡl Ask questions on Text II to help students better understand Text II. 2 Oral Work Supply students with opportunities to talk on the topic "On Sports". 3.Workbook: P137-138 Translation 4.Assignment Workbook:P127-130 Comprehension;P138-144 Blank Filling,Sentence Rewriting 4th session 1.Allow students some time to ask questions on this unit. 2.Workbook: Workbook:P127-130 Comprehension;P138-144 Blank Filling,Sentence Rewriting. 3.Assignment ◆Review Unit 9 Preview Unit 10,including background readings. 1
