1 Unit 16:Word study/Procrastination Teaching objectives:  To review verbs followed by v+ing;  To distinguish present participle from past participle;  To learn the skills involved in reading efficiently, i.e. guessing intelligently and word analysis;  To be able to identify the type of writing of Reading Iⅈ  To be able to sum up the main idea of Dialogue I, Reading I & II;  To be able to retell Dialogue I & Reading I;  To be able to express in fluent English your view on procrastination and cramming.  To supply students with opportunities to practice their basic language skills. Time Allocation and Teaching Procedure: About 4 sessions (8 class hours) are needed for this unit. 1 st session 1. Duty report Ask 3 students to do duty reports 2. Language structures Learn the verbs followed by v+ing; Learn to use the present participle and past participle correctly. Dialogue I Pre-reading questions: Do you consider yourself a fast reader or a slow reader? What makes you so? Besides textbooks, how much do you read each day and what do you read? While-reading : What do you do when you encounter an unfamiliar word in reading? Do you make predictions when you watch TV drama? Do you also do so when you read books? Why is developing guessing ability important in reading? How can word analysis help you with your reading? In what other ways can it be useful? Mini-discussion: Do you think what reading strategy to use is determined by reading purpose? Do you believe in reading a few pages from a dictionary or a vocabulary book each day? Post-reading Assignments: Review Structure and Dialogue. Retell dialogue I. Get the spelling of new words right. Prepare the related topics (See appendix 2) 2 nd session 1. Continuation of the study of Dialogue: Focus on Word Study. 2. Study of Reading I Pre-reading question Are you a procrastinator or a well-organized person? While-reading Ask students to identify the type of writing. Call students’ attention to the organization of the text. How is a procrastinator different from a well-organized person?
