1 Unit 14: Two kinds of brain/Servants of the future Teaching objectives: To learn how to interpret a table of growth; To learn how to express concerns for someone who is ill; To acquaint the students with the possibilities of electronic brain and its limitations; To learn to argue politely; To be able to identify the type of writing of Reading I; To be able to sum up the main idea of Dialogue I, Reading I & II; To be able to retell Dialogue I & Reading I; To be able to express in fluent English your view on electronic brain, computers and internet. To supply students with opportunities to practice their basic language skills. Time Allocation and Teaching Procedure: About 4 sessions (8 class hours) are needed for this unit. 1 st session 1. Duty report Ask 3 students to do duty reports 2. Language structures Learn to interpret a table of growth using the following structures: The table says that there was an increase of 38.7 per cent in 1996 over 1991. In terms of percentages, the table says. The table gives the rate of increase as 10.8%. That was rather high. Learn to express concerns for someone who is ill by asking the following questions: What’s wrong with you? Have you been to the clinic? Did the doctor give you an injection? What medicine did the doctor prescribe? Are you better today? 3. Dialogue I Pre-reading questions: What are the two kinds of brain the writer is referring to? Which do you think is superior? While-reading : How did A differ from B in his view on electronic brain? Discuss the best arguments put forward either by A or B. The useful expressions we use in expressing our views: Let me put it this way. Let me elaborate on what I have said. Remind students that it is important to sound polite even if you are arguing with people. Instead of saying: I don’t agree with you, it sounds more polite to say: I’m afraid I don’t agree with you. I’m not sure that I’m convinced. I’m afraid your worry is groundless. The logic of my argument is .
