The Pre-Raphaelites In 1848,a group of English artists organized the “Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.” In poetry as well as painting, the Pre- Raphaelites turned away from the growing materialism of industrialized England. They sought refuge, through literary symbolism and imagery,in the beauty and comparative simplicity of the medieval world. In the works of the Italian painters prior to Raphael, they found a happy innocence of style that they tried to imitate

The Pre-Raphaelites The ideals of the group of painters were taken over by a literary movement which included Daniel Gabriel Rossetti (a famous poet and painter),his sister Cristina Rossetti, and Algernon Swinburne. Characteristics of their poetry: -A nostalgia for medievalism -Pictorial realism with symbolic overtones -The unions of flesh/spirit and sexuality/religion ·Rossetti''s“Goblin Market'”and her brother's“The Blessed Damozel"are examples of this style

Aestheticism Aestheticism is a Victorian literary movement that was begun in the late 19th century. Followers of the movement believed that art should not be mixed with social, political,or moral teaching. Walter Pater's statement "the love of art for its own sake"is a good summary of aestheticism. The movement had its roots in France, but it gained widespread importance in England in the last half of the nineteenth century, where it helped change the Victorian practice of including moral lessons in literature. Oscar Wilde is one of the best-known "aesthetes"of the late nineteenth century

Aestheticism An Irish-born author of the late 19th century, who spent most of his career in England, Oscar Wilde was famous for his flamboyant wit and style of dress. Wilde was hugely popular for his witticisms and aphorisms,a pithy and pointed statement of a maxim or general truth: -"Man is least himself when he talks in his own person.Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth." -"I love acting. It is so much more real than life." Notice,on page 23 of your packet, Wilde's preface to his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. The first and last sentence here illustrate the views and tendencies of Aestheticism

The End of Victoria By the end of the century, there were many manifestations of a weakening of traditional beliefs. Aestheticism's demand of"art for art's sake"assaulted assumptions about the nature and function of art. It widened the gap between artists and writers on one side and Arnold's "Philistine"public on the other;this would result with the alienation of the artist,a figure who rejects and is rejected by society-a central theme of modernism (e.g.:Joyce's The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man). Late 19th Century art also witnessed the rise of pessimism and stoicism that would greatly affect the Moderns after WWI(e.g.: the novels and poetry of Hardy). For these reasons, the beginning of modernism has been placed as far back as 1890,but most critics agree that "high modernism,"marked by unexampled change, came after the first world war

The Edwardian Period The span between the death of Victoria in 1901 and the beginning of WWI is named for King Edward Vll who reigned from 1901 to 1910. Poets at the time included:Thomas Hardy (wo gave up novels for poetry at the beginning of the century), William Butler Yeats and Rudyard Kipling. Novelists:Joseph Conrad,H.G.Wells,Thomas Hardy, and Henry James. The Edwardian Period ushers in some of the changes that will take place with Modernism, particularly with Conrad's narration,Yeats'nationalism and James' psychological characterizations

Modernism Modernism is defined by its rejection of the literary conventions of the nineteenth century (especially the great Victorian accomplishment of prose realism)and by its opposition to conventional morality, taste, traditions, and economic values. After WWl,artists began the project of modernism which encouraged experimentation-a deliberate departure from tradition and the use of innovative forms of expression that distinguish many styles. The catastrophe of the war shook faith in the moral basis, coherence, and durability of European civilization and raised doubts about the adequacy of traditional literary modes to represent the harsh and inharmonious realities of the postwar world,so Modernist artists felt the need to experiment with literary conventions
