Directions for Term research 1. Prepare a persuasive speech of 8 minutes 2. Choose a controversial issue or an unanswered question. Once you have chosen a topic, you must select a side to argue persuasively Part of your speech should ecognize the opposing view and refute it. Use toulmin Model to outline your arguments, and draw a venn Diagram to do a stakeholder analysis for your persuasion if it applies. ( Please refer to the final exam paper sample. 3. In Week 9, you will have the first one-on-one talk with the instructor for advice on your topic selection and tentative argumentative methods 4. Revise your research plan according to the instructors feedback 5. In Week 13, you will have the second one-on-one talk with the instructor for advice on your supporting materials and argumentative methods 6. No PPT, PREZi or other screen-based visual aid should be used in delivering this 7. Dress code for the term research delivery is smart casual 8. The questions or statements listed below are for your reference Should China levy an inheritance tax? How far should the paparazzi be allowed to go? China should legalize adultery/assisted suicide/selling of human organs, etc Internet access is a human right China should establish military bases abroad 9. You should gather evidence for your argumentation from no less than three 10. The scoring factors are as follows: a. Matter(topic selection and challenge, evidence, logic and reasoning); b. Manner(delivery, appeal, length requirements); Language (accuracy fluency 11. Range find Your performance is to be rated holistically in consideration of the three factors above The general grading criteria are described as follows [Please note that an item in red italics will, by itself, drop a research into the grade category indicated a. Excellent performance: 90-100 1) The research addresses the question fully 2)The research articulates and effectively explains a clear position on the central issue raised by the question 3)The student supports and develops the central argument in an orderly logical manner. 4) Statements are factually correct 5)The student demonstrates strong critical thinking skills in the evaluation and use of evidence 6)The speech has a clear introduction with a central argument, a body

[including confidence, voice gestures, eye contact, etc. 10) The speech meets but not excessively surpasses length requirements 11)The term paper is presented with the topic, specific purpose, outline and bibliography in proper English in the desired form b. Fair Performance: 80-8 1) The research addresses the question in nearly all respects 2) The research articulates and effectively explains a clear position on the central issue raised by the question 3)The student supports and develops the central argument in an orderly, logical manner but some ideas need further clarification, support, or development 4) A few statements are factually incorrect 5) The student demonstrates some critical thinking skills but needs to apply them more consistently throughout essay 6)Best statement of central argument appears in the conclusion rather than the introduction 7)Research material has been provided for all sides of the issue 8 The language is smooth but occasionally inappropriate or awkward carrying some grammatical mistakes 9) The delivery* is effective on the whole ["including confidence, voice gestures, eye contact, etc. 10 The speech meets length requirements 11)The term paper is presented with the topic, specific purpose, outline and bibliography, but there are some flaws in either language or form c. Passable performance: 61-79 1) The research addresses the question in general but omits important pertinent subtopics or issues 2) The student does not make her/his principal conclusion clear or explain It 3)The student's speech, while following some order, does not explain relation among ideas and facts clearly enough to give the argument coherence 4) There are some serious factual errors. 5)The student does not regularly exercise critical thinking skills in the evaluation and use of evidence

[including confidence, voice, gestures, eye contact, etc. 10 The speech does not meet length requirements *. [ speaking for less than 6 minutes 11) The term paper lacks two or more of the required parts(ie, the topic, specific purpose, outline and bibliography) and there are numerous flaws in both language and form Note: Any case of plagiarism or unapproved absence reported at the term research presentation is recognized as failing the course
