Concept • In traditional Chinese medicine, rhinorrhea is mainly mainly characterized by turbid nasal discharge, also known as Nao Lou(sinusitis with purulent discharge). It is divided into two types. The excess syndrome results from the flaring-up of stagnant lung heat affecting the nose due to chronic common cold,or from the upward inflammation of excessive fire in the liver and gallbladder

Etiology and Pathogenesis Accumulated heat in the lung meridian Flaring-up oflung and Excess liver fire damaging the syndrome Excessive fire nose of the liver and gallbladder Rhinorrhea Deficiency of Failure of clear Yang the lung qi in ascending Failure of Deficiency turbid Yin in syndrome Dysfunction of the Deficiency of spleen in descending the spleen transportation and transformation

1.Stagnant Heat in the Lung Meridian Main Manifestation:Stuffy nose with yellowish discharge, sticky with a foul smell, headache, distension of the forehead, relieved by removing the nasal discharge Accompanying Symptoms and Signs:Cough with yellowish turbid phlegm,or fever and aversion to cold Tongue and Pulse:A red tongue with thin yellow coating ,a rapid pulse

1.Stagnant Heat in the Lung Meridian • Main Manifestation:Stuffy nose with yellowish discharge, sticky with a foul smell, headache, distension of the forehead, relieved by removing the nasal discharge • Accompanying Symptoms and Signs:Cough with yellowish turbid phlegm,or fever and aversion to cold • Tongue and Pulse:A red tongue with thin yellow coating ,a rapid pulse

2.Excessive Fire in the Liver and Gallbladder Main Manifestation:Discharge with foul smell, migraine Accompanying Symptoms and Signs:Fever, bitter taste in the mouth ,dry throat, dizziness, tinnitus and deafhess,dream-disturbed sleep and irritability Tongue and Pulse:A red tongue with yellow coating,a wiry and rapid pulse

3.Deficiency of Lung Qi Main Manifestation:White sticky nasal discharge, stuffy nose with a poor sense of smell, nasal obstruction with thin discharge, aggravated by wind and cold Accompanying Symptoms and Signs:Dizziness,a cool feeling of the body and limbs, short breath, spontaneous perspiration,a productive cough Tongue and Pulse:A pale tongue with thin white coating,a moderate pulse

4.Spleen Deficiency and Excessive Dampness Main Manifestation:Stuffy nose with profuse white sticky or yellow turbid discharge, hyposphresia and a heavy sensation of the head Accompanying Symptoms and Signs:A weak body and limbs ,abdominal distention, loose stool or edema of the lower limbs Tongue and Pulse:A pale tongue with white greasy coating,a moderate pulse

Treatment Treatment Principle:Clearing away heat and eliminating dampness to dredge the orifices Acupoint Selection:Select the loca points and points of the Du and Yangming meridians.Shangxing(DU23),Yintang(EX- NH3),Yingxiang(LI20),Hegu(LI4)and Fengchi(GB20)may be chosen as main points.Add Lieque (LU7)for stagnant heat in the lung meridian,Taichong(LR3)for excessive fire in the liver and gallbladder,Taiyuan(LU9)and Fengshu(BL13)for deficiency of lung qi ,Pishu(BL20)and Zusanli(ST36),for deficient spleen qi

Method Puncture Shangxing horizontally upward 0.5-0.8 cun,Yintang horizontally downward 0.5-0.8 cun.Puncture Yingxiang and Fengchi obliquely 0.5 cun and 1.0 towards the nose seperately.Puncture Hegu perpendicularly 1.0-1.5 cun.Apply moxibustion to Feishu and Pishu.Puncture Taiyuan and Zusanli with the reinforcing method, and the other points with the reducing method
