Concept ■ Periarthritis of the shoulder is marked by muscular tension and heaviness of the neck,or accompanied by aching and tender pain in different degrees.The pain can radiate to the upper back and then limitation of the neck occurs.It often occurs in people who are over middle aged,women more than men,and is marked by chronic and repeated attacks.The causative factors are not clearly known up to now,but it is related to such factors as exogenous cold in the back,mental stimulation,fatigue of both the body and mind,prolonged visual fatigue ,irregular menstruation in

Differentiation Main Manifestations:A feeling of contraction and heaviness of the neck tender pain radiating to the shoulder,chest and back in severe cases

Accompanying Symptoms and Signs:There may be an aversion to cold,headache and aching of the joints relieved by pressure in case of wind cold invading the meridians.There may be irritability,dizziness,redness of the eyes,a bitter taste in the mouth,suffocation in the chest and a feverish sensation of the face in case of hyperactivity of liver Yang.There may be dry eyes,visual fatigue or blurred vision,pale complexion ,dizziness,palpitations,pale lips and pale nails in case of deficient liver blood.There may be suffocation in the chest,asthma,vomiting phlegm,blocking the diaphragm.There may be fullness in the chest and hypochondriac region,frequent sighing,irregular menstruation ,all of which are aggravated by emotions or physiological changes in case of qi stagnation and blood stasis

Treatment Treatment Principle:Relaxing muscles and tendons and activating the flow of qi and blood in the meridians and collaterals are the main principles.Expelling wind and clearing away cold,calming the liver and suppressing Yang,replenishing qi and nourishing blood,warming and resolving phlegm retention,soothing the liver,improving the circulation of qi and blood may be used according to different syndromes

Acupoint Selection:Dazhuui(DU14), Zhiyang (DU9),Tianzhu(BL10),Lieque (LU7),Houxi(SI3),Jiaji points(EX-B2)located on the upper back Method Puncture Dazhui obliquely upwards 1.0 cun,Zhiyang perpendicularly 1.0 cun,Tian zhu perpendicularly 1.0-1.5 cun,Lieque obliquely upwards 1.0 cun,Houxi perpendicula- rly 0.5 cun.Puncture the above points with the even method
