The word engineering derives from the Latin root ingeniere, meaning to design or to devise, which also forms the basis of the word ingenious. ① WHAT IS ENGINEERING?- Basic concepts Who is engineer? Engineers apply their knowledge of mathematics, science, materials, and physical principles-as well as their skills in communications and business-in order to develop new and better products and machines. Rather than experiment solely through trial and error, an engineer designs faster, more accurately, and more economically by using mathematics, computers, and science as resources. 5
