Introducing the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans
The Development of Activity Guidelines for Americans 1995 the Dietary Guidelines for Americans has included advice on physical activity In October 2006, The workshop's report, Adequacy y of Evidence for Physical Activity Guidelines Development In 2007, the Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee was composed of 13 leading experts in the field of exercise science and public health The Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee Report 2008 formed HHS issued the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans
The Development of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans • 1995 the Dietary Guidelines for Americans has included advice on physical activity. • In October 2006, The workshop’s report, Adequacy of Evidence for Physical Activity Guidelines Development • In 2007, the Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee was composed of 13 leading experts in the field of exercise science and public health. • The Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee Report 2008 formed. • HHS issued the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans
What Is Physical AC Physical activity has been defined as any bodily movement produced by the contraction of skeletal muscle (a 骼肌收缩) that increases energy expenditure above a basal level ° In this guidelines, physical actiⅳiy generally refers to the subset of physical activity that enhances health
What Is Physical Activity? • Physical activity has been defined as any bodily movement produced by the contraction of skeletal muscle(骨 骼肌收缩) that increases energy expenditure above a basal level. • In this guidelines, physical activity generally refers to the subset of physical activity that enhances health
Two Categories of Bodily Movement ° Baseline activity Health-enhancing physical activit
Two Categories of Bodily Movement • Baseline activity • Health-enhancing physical activity
Baseline activity Baseline activity refers to the light- intensity activities of daily life, such as standing, walking slowly, and lifting lightweight objects People who do only baseline activity are considered to be inactive
Baseline activity • Baseline activity refers to the lightintensity activities of daily life, such as, ■ standing, ■ walking slowly, and ■ lifting lightweight objects. • People who do only baseline activity are considered to be inactive
Health-enhancing physical activity Health-enhancing physical activity is activity that, when added to baseline activity, produces health benefits EXamples Brisk walking, Jumping rope Dancing Lifting weights, and Doing yoga(瑜伽)
Health-enhancing physical activity • Health-enhancing physical activity is activity that, when added to baseline activity, produces health benefits. • Examples ■ Brisk walking, ■ Jumping rope, ■ Dancing, ■ Lifting weights, and ■ Doing yoga(瑜伽)
Classfication of Total Weekly Amounts of Aerobic Physical Activity Levels of Range of Moderate Summary of Physical Intensity Minutes a Overall Health Comment Activity Week Benefits Inactive No activity beyondNone baseline baseline Being inactive is unhealthy Activity beyond baseline but fewer Low levels of activity are Low than 150 minutes aSome clearly preferable to an inactive wee lifestyle Activity at the high end of this Medium 150 minutes to 300 range has additional and more minutes a week Substantial extensive health benefits than acti\ ity at the low end Current science does not allow More than 300 researchers to identify an Highminutes a week Additionalupper limit of activity above which there are I health benefits
Classification of Total Weekly Amounts of Aerobic Physical Activity Levels of Physical Activity Range of Moderate Intensity Minutes a Week Summary of Overall Health Benefits Comment Inactive No activity beyond baseline baseline None Being inactive is unhealthy. Low Activity beyond baseline but fewer than 150 minutes a week. Some Low levels of activity are clearly preferable to an inactive lifestyle. Medium 150 minutes to 300 minutes a week Substantial Activity at the high end of this range has additional and more extensive health benefits than activity at the low end. High More than 300 minutes a week Additional Current science does not allow researchers to identify an upper limit of activity above which there are no additional health benefits
Four Categories of Total Weekly Amounts of Aerobic Physical Activity Inactive is no activity beyond baseline activities of daily living Low activity is activity beyond baseline but fewer than 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week or the equivalent amount (75 minutes)of vigorous-intensity activity Medium activity is 150 minutes to 300 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week(or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous intensity physical activity a week). In scientific terms, this range is approximately equivalent to 500 to 1,000 metabolic equivalent(MET代谢当量) minutes a week High activity is more than the equivalent of 300 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week
Four Categories of Total Weekly Amounts of Aerobic Physical Activity ▪ Inactive is no activity beyond baseline activities of daily living. ▪ Low activity is activity beyond baseline but fewer than 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week or the equivalent amount (75 minutes) of vigorous-intensity activity. ▪ Medium activity is 150 minutes to 300 minutes of moderateintensity activity a week (or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorousintensity physical activity a week). In scientific terms, this range is approximately equivalent to 500 to 1,000 metabolic equivalent (MET代谢当量) minutes a week. ▪ High activity is more than the equivalent of 300 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week
The Health Benefits of Physical Activity--Major Research Findings Regular physical activity reduces the risk of many adverse health outcomes Some physical activity is better than none For most health outcomes additional benefits occur as the amount of physical activity increases through higher intensity, greater frequency, and/or longer duration Most health benefits occur with at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity physical activity Additional benefits occur with more physical activity
