For a future point of time ݐ ,the state ܺሺݐሻ is a random variable, and ሼܺሺݐሻ, ݐ 0ሽ is called a stochastic process with continuous time. Let ௌ denote the “history” of the process up to time ݏ .This history contains information about which states the system has visited from when it was put into operation at time 0 and until time ݏ. 7 Markov property If we consider a system that is in state ݅ at time ݏ ,the probability that this system will be in state ݆ at time ݐ ݏ is independent of what happened to the system up to time ݏ ,that is, of the history ௌ . This means that the process has no memory. [Note that ܶ denotes the ݅th interoccurrence time, while ܶ ෩ is the time spent during a visit to state ݅.] We want to find Pr ሺܶ ෩ ݐሻ. We observe that the process is still in state ݅ at time ݏ ,that is, ܶ ෩ ݏ ,and are interested in finding the probability that it will remain in state ݅ for ݐ time units more.
