1. Calculate the lower 5% and 1% moment capacities of a rectangular steel beam 200 mm deep x 50 mm wide when the design yield stress (Y) is 245N/mm2. The following uncertainties are to be assumed: v dimension (b,d) 2% 0 yield stress (Y) 8% 10% 2. (i) Using Advanced First Order Second Moment (AFOSM) reliability method, calculate the reliability index (β) of a tanker mid-ship section having the following statistical properties of the design variables: Variables Mean cov Section modulus Z 3m 3 5% Yield stress Y 245 N/mm 2 10% Applied moment M 3.75 x 105 kNm 20% Use the performance function as defined below: g(x) = YZ-M Also calculate the partial safety factors of the design variables. (ii) For the problem as defined in (i), calculate also b using linear error theory and mean value approach.
