Dura mater external layer, tough and dense fibrous tissue Arachnoid a thin intermediate layer, lack of the blood vessels & nerves Pia mater a thin and translucent internal layer, riches in blood vessles Section 1 Meninges of Spinal cord and Brain

1. Spinal dura mater • Superiorly: continuous with cerebral dura mater at foramen magnum • Inferiorly: it become thinner at the level of the 2nd sacral vertebra and enwrap the filum terminale ① and ended in the coccyx • Laterally: forms the external memberanes of the spinal nerves ② I. 3. Spinal pia mater • lies on the surface of spinal cord & inserted into sulcus & fissure • Inferiorly: is continous with terminal filum ① → coccyx • Laterally: is relatively thick to form the denticulate ligament ② and anchors the spinal cord laterally to the arachnoid & dura maters. ② ① Coccyx Spianl cord Arachnoid Dura mater
