Lecture 3c Patterns of organization in writing 1. Writers use several types of organization patterns in their writing. These patterns break down into sections called natural and logical The writer employs natural patterns of organization most often in essays which use the first person point of view to express, describe, or explain. Logical patterns of organization are most often used in writings which use the third person point of view and whose purposes are to explain, inform or persuade Most scientific writing use the logical patterns oforganization 2. Logical patterns of organization Logical patterns of organization arise out of reason. In logicall patterned writing, as in scientific writing, there is a beginning, a middle, and an end, or Introduction, middle development and Conclusion In organizational patterns governed by the logic of the topic and thesis, the beginning, middle and end, are all about one idea, focussed or developed to meet the need of a logical situation The logical patterns of organization ranges from the simplest definition of some word, thing or idea to analysis to the most complex of argumentation
