Lesson five Man of the moment I. Teaching obiectives: After learning this unit, students are supposed to 1. get familiar with the rules of word formation 2. get familiar with some grammatical points 3. retell the text as a whole 4. have a thorough understanding of the whole text: Man of the moment 5. get a list of the new words and expressions and be able to use them freely in writing and daily Il. Listening and speaking activities 1. Listen to the recording of the text and fill in the blanks about the main ideas of the article 2. Talk about the purpose of the author and discuss the questions on the text IlL. Reading Comprehension and language Activities 1. Pre-reading discussions: 1)Can you give a brief introduction to all the characters? 2)Why do you think Parks decision to invite Douglas as a guest after 17 years? 3)What would have happened if Vic were able to haul himself out of the water? Why does Sharon drag him into the water? Does she intend to kill this cruel man? How does the story end? What do you 2. Background knowledge: Black comedy is otherwise known as black humor and possibly first appeared in the late 1950s and 1960 s in American literature. It is a dark comedy and finds great humor in what most people regard as inappropriate subject matter. Black comedy mocks serious topics such as death and religion and makes fun of various organized, logical aspects of our everyday existence. It is often grotesque and morbid. The closest example of black comedy in the theatre is a small number of plays that fall under the genre of tragic farces 3.
