Synopsis Hughie Erskine was charming but not wealthy. He fell in love with Laura Merton,whose father did not agree to their engagement unless Hughie had ten thousand pounds.One morning on the way to the Mertons,Hughie visited his good friend,the painter Alan Trevor.In his studio,Hughie met a model beggar who looked so miserable that Hughie could not help feeling compassion for him. h d e
