This course draws on strategic management,economics,and organization theory for tools to address important challenges faced by managers in firms where technology is changing.This technology may be information,product,process and/or administrative. Course Objectives: To develop an awareness of the range,scope,and complexity of the issues and problems related to the strategic management of technology and innovation,this course is designed: To develop an understanding of the"state of the art"of the strategic management of technology and innovation To develop understanding about the process of bringing"newness"into an organization- through internal innovation and/or through external strategic alliances. To develop a conceptual framework for assessing and auditing the technology capabilities of a business organization. To develop insight concerning the skills necessary to be effective as a general manager in the innovation process and/or alliance building process

Recommended Texts: Margaret A.White and Garry D.Bruton,The Management of Technology and Innovation:A Strategic Approach,Publishing House of Electronics Industry,2007. Gary Libecap and Marie Thursby,Technological Innovation:Generating Economic Results, Elsevier Science Publishing Company,2008. Course Requirements: Students are expected to be active participants in the class.In order to make the best use of class time,students are expected to read the assigned material before attending each lecture.There will be one exam and one course(group)project. 1.Class participation.The class uses an applied laboratory approach that integrates lecture material with in-class exercises and class discussion.I expect students to attend class regularly,do the reading,and participate fully in class activities. 2.Class Project.The project paper is supposed to be a ten-page (double space,tables and figures excluded,12 point font)piece that offers a concise,original,and sound case analysis for a company's strategies on technology and innovation.Students should apply key concepts that are taught in class to analyze a real-life case.Each student should work with 3 other fellow classmates on the project.The timeline for group project is as follows. Groups should be formed before Sept.28th,2009. ● Topic of projects should be turned in on Oct.19th,2009 ● Project presentations are schedule on Dec.28th,2009 and January 4th,2010.Ten teams will be selected through a lottery system. Project report is due on January 4t,2010. 3.Examinations.There will be one final examination to be arranged based on the university's schedule. Grades: 10%Attendance and Participation 40%Final Exam 50%Group Project Syllabus Review/Revision:During the course of the semester I will regularly review student progress,and will revise the syllabus to meet class needs when necessary. 2
