summary An unnamed narrator, sail as a passenger aboard a cargo ship from batavia The ship is hit by a storm that capsizes the ship and sends everyone except the narrator and an old Swede overboard The narrator's ship eventually collides with a gigantic black galleon The narrator finds those elderly crewmen on the galleon very strange; he steals writing materials from the captains cabin to keep a journal (the "manuscript"of the title) which he resolves to cast into the sea At the end, The ship sank into the sea and the article abruptly ends here OLOOPPA
